The “IoTization” of our equipment allows us to seek two types of gains in parallel. The first is in the optimization of the intrinsic management performances within the Equipment division with traceability and real-time visual indicators. And the second provides additional action levers to the Construction teams on their usage on-site thanks to configurable alerts. It’s a win-win in terms of productivity.”
Patrick N’Kodia, Director of Bouygues Construction Matériel
IoT at the service of fleet management
Bouygues Construction Matériel turned to the connected solution from Omniscient. The solution manages this fleet of equipment deployed across its entire French park of bungalows and consoles, on the main components of tower cranes, and on the new B20 formwork.
This significant project involves a hundred collaborators dedicated to monitoring the equipment of over a thousand construction sites, distributed over 5 technical bases. Indeed, it represents the installation of Abeeway sensors on more than 20,000 pieces of equipment and the processing of millions of GPS data by Omniscient.
To adapt to volume constraints, geographic scope, and indoor or outdoor locations, Omniscient turned to Abeeway to provide a geolocation sensor and to Objenious for support and IoT expertise.
With the range of technologies offered, it is possible to connect equipment even in isolated and challenging environments.
Moreover, the LoRa technology ultimately offers several advantages:
- An energy autonomy lasting several years,
- Bidirectional communications,
- Strong penetration capability in buildings and deep underground
This approach allows the entire construction site ecosystem to gain productivity. With a click, the fleet manager can navigate on a virtual map. They visualize in real time the location and the follow-up sheet of each piece of equipment. Indeed, this sheet incorporates the construction site configuration of the equipment as well as links to quality control sheets. The algorithms and collected data allow the calculation of performance indicators dedicated to fleet management.
Leveraging Geolocation Data to Optimize the Management of Millions of Euros of Equipment
Bouygues Construction Matériel’s commitment to further digitizing its operations brings significant benefits.
- Facilitated billing process. All information related to the entry/exit of equipment or the utilization rate is historicized across all construction sites, allowing for swifter and easier billing.
- Better allocation of resources. They identify equipment not used on sites and available for mobilization to avoid external rentals.
- Accurate and reliable tracking of the equipment’s life cycle. They identify the equipment to prioritize for release to avoid refurbishment costs and ensure regular maintenance of the equipment for a better lifespan.
- Reduction in stockholding costs. A better overview of the overall stock allows for minimizing inventory per depot.
- Real-time management. Decisions are made quickly. Information is at hand and up to date, freeing up operational time for higher-value tasks.
Construction and IoT: A Huge Potential for Innovation
This partnership offers great prospects in construction: measuring the productivity of machinery, optimizing movements, and the safety of workers. IoT technologies are at the heart of the construction site and offer unprecedented efficiency gain prospects.
“Material tracking is now a widespread use case thanks to the Internet of Things, and the benefits are now more than proven. We are pleased to support Bouygues Construction Matériel and put our technological expertise at their service.”
Bernardo Cabrera, Director of Objenious by Bouygues Telecom
“By connecting construction sites, the construction sector will considerably gain performance thanks to better visibility of the field reality. Relying on analysis and tracking of their equipment, Bouygues Construction Matériel already benefits from a real-time inventory of all the equipment deployed on sites or in stock across all its technical bases in France. A small revolution for their operational teams!”
