In 2014, Bouygues Telecom, a pioneer in the field, deployed VoLTE for IoT to offer its customers unmatched voice call sound quality

Historically, the 4G network was used only for data transport, while voice calls went through the 2G and 3G cellular networks.

Applying this standard to IoT opens up many possibilities as it allows for voice calls to be made and received on the 4G network. Indeed, the switch to 2G and 3G is no longer necessary and data exchange can continue without interruption.

VoLTE offers improved voice call quality with better clarity, less latency and more reliable reception, providing a smoother and more efficient communication experience.

Reduced call establishment time

When using 3G, the average time to connect a call takes 8 seconds. With VoLTE, this time is reduced by a factor of 4, taking approximately 2 seconds to establish a call connection.

Continuity of service

With VoLTE, users can switch between 4G/LTE networks seamlessly, without interruption or loss in voice quality. This ensures an optimal call experience at any time and place

International availability

Bouygues Telecom’s agreements enable you to enjoy VoLTE in the vast majority of European countries. At an international level, VoLTE is available particularly in countries where 2G and 3G coverage is no longer guaranteed

VoLTE, in what use cases?

Numerous connected devices use voice as a means of communication; such is the case for elevators, telemonitoring, and ambulances. These connected objects rely on impeccable sound quality and continuity of service for optimal functioning.

In new generation elevator management systems, VoLTE ensures immediate and quality voice communication in case of breakdown or emergency. Emergency call devices installed in the cabins can benefit from VoLTE to transmit clear and uninterrupted voice alerts, ensuring the safety of users.

VoLTE improves voice quality for security and emergency devices and ensures instant transmission of voice messages. Emergency buttons and connected voice alarms provide improved performance and rapid response in critical situations. VoLTE also provides access to top-notch IoT connectivity for industrial equipment and personal devices such as senior alert bracelets

The eCall system, mandatory since 2018 and designed to trigger emergency calls automatically, is evolving. A new standard called NGeCall now requires car manufacturers to migrate to VoLTE technology for these automatic calls, ensuring more reliable connectivity and better quality of service

VoLTE supports connected urban infrastructure, including audio and video intercoms, as well as parking assistance calls. By integrating VoLTE, these systems benefit from fast, reliable, and high-quality communication, even in high-density environments with many connected objects.
